Active editors
The number of active Wikipedia editors seems to decrease for the mature Wikipedias. The peak was in 2007. Early adopters started in 2005.
For other (smaller, newer) Wikipedias the number of active editors still increases.
It ranges between 50-100 per mio native speakers (language users).
There are 1-2 moderators per mio language users.
Minority languages (e.g. Basque) have more volunteers.
Reasons
edit- Saturation:
- all major subjects (lemmas) have been described
- fewer updates
- older editor community
- Increased use of mobile devices; less efficient editing on mobile devices
- Youngsters are not using a PC any more
- People want always something new
- Use of ChatGPT and advanced search engines
- Bad, or incomplete, non-systematic or coherent user documentation
- Old GUI, not dynamic, too few multimedia, too few user interactivity, no concurrent editing (e.g. like in Google Docs)
- Unattractive environment, unwelcome community for newcomers
- Editing is much more complicated than in the period 2005-2007
- More emphasis on references
