History and background

edit

PACKED vzw was founded in 2005 by Argos, M HKA, S.M.A.K. and Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens as a knowledge platform for the archiving and preservation of audiovisual arts on elektronic carriers.

The Flemish government recognised PACKED vzw as an umbrella partnership with nationally relevant expertise and honoured it with an operating subsidy for the period 2006-2010.

To increase its support base, PACKED vzw focused on the challenges of digital cultural heritage in general. Since 1 January 2011, PACKED vzw has been recognised as a national centre of expertise for digital cultural heritage. In this way, it was realised what Minister of Culture Bert Anciaux wrote in the Policy Document on Culture 2004-2009: "It is advisable to consider setting up a Flemish knowledge center on digitisation. In other countries, such institutions are the spearhead of an integrated digitisation policy. "

Since 2013 PACKED vzw broadened its activities to the arts sector. Much of the arts heritage is preserved by the arts sector itself. However, in a digital environment the distinction between heritage and the arts is fading: born digital and digitised content already needs immediate care to fully integrate within the shared/collective memory.

At the start of 2018 PACKED vzw has 10 employees, accounting for 9 FTE.

As of 1 January 2019 PACKED vzw became part of the new organisation, together with the Vlaams Instituut voor Archivering (VIAA) and Lukas.
