Public domain day
Each year on 1 January we celebrate Public Domain Day. On this day thousands of works of authors that died 70 years ago enter the public domain and can be used in Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia platforms. Practically this means that if for example an author died in 1946, all his/her works enter the public domain on 1 January 2017.
This results in the restoration of many works on Wikimedia Commons that previously had to be deleted because of copyright, and museums release images that entered the public domain on this day.
