Wiki Loves Art/2016

Wiki Loves Art is a photo project in what photographers and volunteers from Wikipedia visit museums, archives, galleries and libraries to take photos of pieces of art the institution has designated.

Purpose edit

Wiki Loves Art intends to build up contacts with cultural institutions and other organisations, and to enlarge their digital presence particularly in the Wiki-projects by increasing the availability of photos of their artwork collections under a free license (the GLAM objective). The project also offers an opportunities for volunteers and contributors from Wikipedia to meet with interested people for the world of art and photography. Participating in Wiki Loves Art provides an opportunity for people to encounter and get to know the organisations and their art collections and to increase and improve Wiki- articles about these organisations and about their collection on Wikipedia (the Education objective).

The culminating event of the Wiki Loves Art is a photography contest.

Participating in Wiki Loves Art is easy for institutions and organisations, and it's a practical and easy way to collaborate with Wikipedia. It will certainly generate more attention for its artwork collection making the institution or organisation more relevant for the general public. With each image the institution is credited as the source and links back to the website of the institution. The institution determines themselves which pieces from their collection take part, and participants are only allowed to take photos of these selected pieces and upload them.

Participating in Wiki Loves Art is straightforward for existing Wikipedia contributors, but it a real opportunity for wikipedia readers to get to know the wiki-projects world and become a contributor themselves. Generally new contributors explore the wiki-world at their own peril, and the proverbial many were called for also the proverbial few actually succeeded and continued to make valuable contributions. Adjuvant projects will help newcomers over the initial hurdles. The contributors will upload photos for the contest. After the upload period, a jury will judge all the participating images and select the best ten. The authors/uploaders of these photos will receive a prize.

Afterwards volunteers from Wikipedia will add the photos to relevant articles, and more information about the pieces will be added to the file pages as documentation, including the author, date of creation, description of the piece, and more metadata.

History and background edit

The concept of Wiki Loves Art comes from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, where several projects have resulted in a large number of photos. Local media created also much publicity for Wikipedia and the involved institutions.

In 2009 Wiki Loves Art was also organized in the Netherlands. In that year 46 institutions took part in the project and opened their doors.

The concept of Wiki Loves Art is based on the Netherlands concept of Wiki Loves Art which is designed in a flexible concept, with core values :

Main prize category the best photograph criteria: technical quality , usability for Wikipedia & Originality
Other categories a.o.: quantity (who takes most pictures in most different participating institutions?), showing the museum process (pictures describe the operating procedures of a participating institutions - mutually exclusive with main category) ; Most welcoming participating institutions (on basis of questionnaire participating photographers).
Perhaps a special focus on pieces outside regular collection/ collection in storage

The Target public of the WLA2016 /BE project (from the point of WMBE and the project team )

GLAM-ORGANISATIONS: with organisations we mean
- any Public Institution like museums, libraries, theatre and opera house cultural centres and similar that offers or makes available to the public permanent or temporary artefacts, works of art or any work with cultural value, such as paintings, pictures, frescoes, posters, prints, statues, any figurative art on any imaginable carrier, architecture, buildings or tailored environments of artistic and cultural value, performances etc...
- any Private Institution that performs the same/similar function(s), has am item / collection of items that is of interest and makes it/these accessible to the public or wants to make a virtual display of (some) the item(s) in their collection
- any Private Person that owns a collection of culturally important artefacts which is not accessible to the public and wants to make a virtual display of (some) the item(s) in their collection
- any organisation that is involved in the preservation or collection of Belgium's cultural or artistic heritage

PUBLIC : the general public, primarily people who have an interest in our/their cultural and artistic Heritage : permanent or temporary artefacts, works of art or any work with cultural value, such as paintings, pictures, frescoes, posters, prints, statues, any figurative art on any imaginable carrier, architecture, buildings or tailored environments of artistic and cultural value, performances etc.

    - a limited number of pre-registered participants and a WMBE session conductor are allowed to take photographs
    - outside normal opening hours / or in a closed of section of the organisation
    - under supervision of the director/intendant/conservator of the organisation
    - using (otherwise forbidden) lightning equipment/ flashes etc = access to electricity provided by the organisation
    - the session will be video taped

- - format b : an open single session
    - an unlimited number of unregistered participants and a WMBE session conductor are allowed to take photographs
    - outside or during normal opening hours / or in a temporary closed of section of the organisation
    - under supervision of the director/intendant/conservator of the organisation
    - using (otherwise forbidden) lightning equipment/ flashes etc = access to electricity provided by the organisation
    - the session will be video taped

- - format c: open access for limited period
    - an unlimited number of unregistered participants are allowed to take photographs
    - during normal opening hours and for limited period of time ( e.g. a week )
    - under supervision of the director/intendant/conservator of the organisation
    - using (otherwise forbidden) lightning equipment/ flashes etc = access to electricity provided by the organisation
    - the sessions will not be video taped

- - format d : registered users for the whole contest period
    - an unlimited number of pre-registered participants are allowed to take photographs (participants register with WLA and are ticket off at the entrance)
    - during normal opening hours and for the whole period of the contest
    - using (otherwise forbidden) lightning equipment/ flashes etc = access to electricity provided by the organisation / or no special lightning equipment allowed
    - the sessions will not be video taped by WLA, supervision at discretion of organisation

anything could be said about how the organisation want to be 'seen' in the Wikimedia projects / Wikipedia etc... an organisation could opt for - a presentation of the organisation with a photo gallery teaser about its collection - a presentation of the organisation with a photo gallery teaser about a single artefact - a presentation of the organisation with a number of artefact + articles about those artefacts with photo gallery of each artefact

WMBEs primary goal is to Engaging people in free knowledge a clear outreach objective in order to reach out to the public we need to assess their needs/interest and focus it on the wiki-projects. In this case through WLA2016 /BE project . The project needs

- contestants / participants for the photo contest
- editors to write articles about participating organisations and photographic contributions

The project team is composed out of several people coming from Wikimedia Belgium and other organisations with a long-term expertise in working with cultural institutions and/or open knowledge projects. Original plan: Meetings for multiple museums are scheduled in February, March, and April 2016 and will be spread over the country to have all regions covered. Additional group meetings with cultural institutions are still to be determined and depend on requests of interested organisations. We aim to organise about 6 meetings open for multiple museums and to organise these meetings in sponsored conference rooms and meeting spaces in various museums/institutions that are interested in participating in Wiki Loves Art. If necessary we can also use one of the large meeting spaces of one of our partners in Brussels.
